Trail Overview

The loop adds significant distance in the deep sand and a relatively steep decent into the wash to get to the slot canyon. If you stay to the southern end and go directly into the wash, the route is accessible by most 4x4s with tires suitable for traversing extremely deep, powdery and loose sand. Most vehicles will be required to air down their tires to traverse the area. The reward is one of the most beautiful slot canyons you have ever seen. Plan on exploring the canyon walls and the wonders of erosion. Also, see if you can find the steps to the native grainary. Hint, they start about six feet above the floor and are shallow because of erosion since they were cut.

Difficulty

Deep sand makes this trail challenging. This trail should not be taken by an any street vehicles that do not have tires that can be aired down or are designed to traverse the deep sand. The entire trail is deep sand other than short areas with some gravel/sand. Do not take this trail during, or shortly after, any wet period. You will be traveling in a slot canyon/wash. Flash floods can occur without warning from thunderstorms miles away.

Trailhead sign to the East side of loop, says high clearance 4WD. No 2WD, no AWD. But it does not restrict to ATV. Deep sand, mostly single lane wide trail, with many areas with secondary side trails (easy passing/crossing). Did it with a stock 25 Ranger, KO3 tires, 19 PSI, mostly on 4H. Switched to 4L on a uphill section on the way back, mostly because I had zero experience on deep sand and wanted to play it safe. Other vehicle on trail today: 25 Tacoma and a Lexus SUV.

Very very deep sand. Sand Hill our 750hp couldn’t make it up the hill. Had to turn around didn’t make the complete loop. A person in a 2 wheel drive Jeep was stuck a 1/4 mile in the trail.

Very Sandy as stated aired down good little ride to a fun spot. Running SXS tours out there. Be respectful and it’s well reciprocated.

Trail was in good condition and was busy with lots of people. Soft sand so will need 4x4 vehicle and high clearance.

Easy trail just keep pace and move through the sand, did this in a 23 Tacoma lifted and 33s, but I had my cousin with a stock 4Runner do it fine. You have to do it as an out and back trail, you won’t be able to complete the loop because the second half of the trail is for atv.

This is not an ATV trail. Did it with a stock 4WD Jeep Gladiator, it went fine. You have to start from the south road, I guess the northern loop is not suitable to anything other than ATV. Make sure to keep your speed in deep sands and you’ll be just fine! Don’t try with an AWD or 2WD, you need 4WD to move in the sand. Once at the wash when it turns left the trail become rocky and you follow the wash up to the slot canyon. Really worth it, so beautiful! The entire loop is not feasible without an ATV though, you’ll come in front of a really steep deep sand hill that your truck won’t be able to climb. I came back the same way.

The trail sign states that high clearance 4x4 vehicles are allowed. We took our stock F350 SRW and saw another almost identical truck, Jeep, and even a Subaru Crosstrek. Most people had UTVs. We headed east from the parking lot to the slot canyon and returned the same way. I don’t know how the western is. The return trip was uphill which made it harder. There was only one stretch of deep sand on the way back, not too far from the lot, where i was sweating. Otherwise, a few sections are narrow with branches and some of the sandy areas have some rough washboard. The sand was deep and loose in some sections. The high clearance is so you don’t bulldoze sand in those sections. The rocky areas wouldn’t be a problem.

This is not just an ATV trail. There were several Jeeps, Defenders, Lexus GX’s, etc. The north section of the loop is somewhat difficult and is the likely place to cause you to get stuck according to several people who took that route (including one who did get stuck). The southern section going out and back is much more manageable and is just multiple areas of soft sand, going uphill to exit the trail. I managed just fine in my stock 2024 Jeep Wrangler.
