Trail Overview
BLM 64T is a brief, fiercely technical 0.4-mile backcountry connector trail that serves as a vital link between the main BLM 64 and BLM 61 routes. The adventure immediately immerses explorers into a deeply carved, winding sandy wash flanked by dense, fragrant juniper trees and vibrant high-desert scrub. The vivid red sand is exceptionally soft and deeply tracked, requiring deliberate momentum as the two-track playfully meanders through the scenic, isolated canyon bottom. As the trail progresses upward, the terrain dramatically and abruptly transitions from deep sand into an exposed, rugged rock surface. The absolute defining feature of this short transit is a demanding, steep climb directly up a prominent sandstone staircase. Navigating this formidable, rocky ascent requires careful tire placement and a slow, highly methodical crawling pace to safely conquer the ledges. Surrounded by beautiful, rugged geology under expansive, cloudy skies, this route offers a perfectly concentrated dose of technical off-roading for properly equipped rigs.
Difficulty
BLM 64T firmly earns a Level 4 Moderate-Advanced technical rating due to its unforgiving mix of demanding terrain. While the exceptionally deep, power-sapping sand in the lower winding wash requires air-down tires for essential flotation, the true technical hazard is the severe sandstone staircase located on the climb. This exceptionally steep, jagged rock climb absolutely mandates a highly capable vehicle equipped with a true four-wheel-drive system, excellent articulation, and high ground clearance. Attempting to scale this punishing set of ledges in a standard AWD crossover or low-clearance vehicle will inevitably result in lost traction and devastating undercarriage or body damage.
