Trail Overview
Functioning as an exhilarating 1.1-mile backcountry loop directly off the main BLM 61 trail, BLM 61E offers an immersive and remarkably fast-paced high-desert adventure. This vivid, deep red-sand two-track playfully meanders through a dense, fragrant landscape of mature green juniper trees and thick desert scrub under expansive, cloudy skies. While the route is undeniably scenic, drivers must remain highly focused; the entire length of the trail is heavily textured with relentless, bumpy washboards that will aggressively rattle your suspension. Furthermore, the twisting path features numerous incredibly fun but tight, steep-banked S-turns. Because rigid juniper branches firmly crowd the inside apex of these sweeping corners, aggressive side-panel pinstriping is a guarantee for any mid-size to full-size rig attempting to carry momentum through the curves. It is a fantastic, secluded loop perfect for those looking to practice their sand-driving skills while accepting a few inevitable desert brush scratches along the way.
Difficulty
BLM 61E earns a solid Level 3 Moderate technical rating primarily due to its exceptionally deep, power-robbing red sand. Navigating this soft, shifting terrain mandates a highly capable four-wheel-drive system and significantly lowered tire air pressures to maintain essential flotation and continuous momentum through the heavily tracked S-curves. Additionally, the relentless, high-frequency washboards require properly aired-down tires simply to maintain ride comfort and vehicle control. While the trail fundamentally lacks sheer rock-crawling ledges or deep water crossings, the exceptionally tight, encroaching juniper trees situated directly on the inside corners pose a significant cosmetic hazard, guaranteeing unavoidable pinstriping for larger vehicles. Low-clearance AWD crossovers will absolutely struggle in the deep sand and should avoid this specific loop entirely.
