Trail Overview

This section of the Orange Trail outside Green River, Utah, blends playful OHV terrain with striking desert scenery that feels almost otherworldly. Originally developed over many years as part of a larger loop system, this segment offers a mild but engaging challenge for stock high clearance 4x4s. The trail is filled with whoops, washes, and rolling dips that keep suspension moving and make the drive more entertaining than a standard dirt road. Rocky stretches appear throughout the route, including larger step-style obstacles up to roughly 18 inches tall that require careful tire placement and good clearance. One of the more demanding features is a dirt hill scattered with loose rocks that can test traction on the climb. Despite the obstacles, the trail remains approachable for prepared vehicles with durable tires and a good 4lo range. Surrounding the route are colorful stones, layered terrain, and dramatic contrasts that create a feeling of being on Mars.

Difficulty

This route combines frequent whoops, washes, rocky sections, and step-style obstacles up to 18 inches tall, making it more challenging than a casual scenic road. The terrain is still manageable for capable stock high clearance 4x4s, but suspension movement, traction, and tire placement are important throughout the route.

History

The Orange Trail system is part of the legacy of William Louis “Bill” Thompson, a longtime public servant and trail builder honored at the trailhead memorial. Bill helped establish and improve multiple trail systems throughout Utah and worked as an OHV coordinator and trails specialist after retiring from the U.S. Forest Service. This trail was a 15-year project for him and stands as a tribute to his commitment, perseverance, and love of outdoor recreation.
