Trail Overview
This section of the trail follows part of the historic Old Spanish Route and offers a more demanding drive for high-clearance 4x4 vehicles. This is not the single-track version, but a wider vehicle route that still presents several challenges along the way. Drivers will encounter multiple washouts, uneven terrain, and a narrow ledge section where longer wheelbases or wider rigs may need careful tire placement and extra attention. As the route continues, the terrain becomes rougher and more technical, with loose rock, rocky climbs, and sections of ledges near the end. Once you reach the Green River Cutoff, you will pass two spur roads commonly used for camping. There is also a homemade gate on the route that must be opened and closed behind you. This trail combines history, scenery, and enough obstacles to keep the drive interesting for capable stock or lightly modified 4x4s.
Difficulty
This Old Spanish Route section is intended for high-clearance 4x4 vehicles and includes several obstacles that raise the challenge above a basic trail. Expect washouts, off-camber areas, a narrow ledge section that can be difficult for long-wheelbase or wide vehicles, and increasingly rocky terrain with ledges near the end. Careful tire placement and low range are recommended. Skid plates, good all-terrain tires, and solid ground clearance are strongly advised. Stock capable 4x4s can complete it in dry conditions, but inexperienced drivers may find portions challenging.
History
This trail follows part of the historic Old Spanish Route, once used by traders, settlers, and travelers moving goods and livestock across the Southwest. These routes were critical travel corridors long before modern highways, linking remote water sources and passes through rugged country.
