Trail Overview
Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. Oil Well Flat is a fun and approachable trail that runs through the heart of the San Rafael Swell, connecting Buckhorn Draw to Kane Wash. The route winds through juniper trees and rolling sandstone terrain, constantly changing as you move from open flats to sections that parallel towering cliffs and rock formations. It’s an ideal trail for beginners looking to experience true desert scenery without committing to anything overly technical. Along the way, you’ll encounter several small washouts that require attention but are generally manageable with proper line choice. As the trail wraps around features like the obscure arch in the Sid’s Mountain area, a few off-camber corners add a bit of challenge, especially for newer drivers or those unfamiliar with their vehicle. Some tighter sections between trees may result in light pinstriping, so wider vehicles should proceed carefully. There are a handful of dispersed campsites along the route, making it a great option for an overnight stop.
Difficulty
This trail is generally easy and well-suited for beginners, with mostly smooth dirt and sand surfaces. The main challenges come from several small washouts, a few off-camber corners, and occasional tight sections between trees that can cause pinstriping. Most stock high clearance 4x4 vehicles will have no trouble in dry conditions, but newer drivers should take their time through the off-camber turns. Wet conditions could slightly increase difficulty due to softer ground and reduced traction.
History
The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
