Trail Overview
Motoqua - Birthing Cave is an exciting out-and-back trail designed for moderate-level offroaders seeking to explore striking geologic wonders and unique desert caves. Branching off from Motoqua Road, this roughly 3.4-mile trek rises from an elevation of 4,035 feet to a peak of 4,294 feet, offering an excellent showcase of red rock formations and scenic canyon views. The initial stretch begins as an easy, fast-moving path with minor obstacles, making it accessible to most high-clearance vehicles. However, the route quickly transitions into a more technical challenge as you progress deeper into the rugged terrain. Offroaders will encounter a series of steeper rocky climbs, ledge obstacles up to a foot high, and tight, sweeping turns that demand careful wheel placement.
To successfully navigate the final portion of the trail and reach the birthing cave, a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle, SxSs, or capable ATV is highly recommended. The technical difficulty increases to a solid moderate level, requiring drivers to maneuver around sharp switchbacks and loose rocks where tire traction is key. Once at the end of the route, visitors can explore the fascinating birthing cave up close, while also keeping an eye out for a nearby small natural rock arch with a pine tree growing directly beneath it. This trail is best run during the cooler spring and autumn months, as summer temperatures in this southern Utah region can become extreme.
Difficulty
Most of the first half of the trail is rated a 2 however, the second half has some steeper rocky climbs, rock ledges, sharp turns and other obstacles that make this a fun adventure for the properly equipped vehicle.
