Trail Overview
Milt's Mile is a 1.7-mile point-to-point trail rated 7 of 10 located within the Sand Mountain Open Riding OHV Area. This trail is one of the first trails that was developed in this recreational area, also known as Sand Hollow. Milt's Mile starts with a serious gatekeeper climb up a double waterfall. There are easier optional lines and even a bypass. Before you have much time to recover from the gatekeeper, you find the next obstacle a deep hole, which has several tough lines used to exit. This is followed by the wall which has an optional "S-turn" way up. The trail works its way up through a series of moderate obstacles and eventually drops back into the canyon where the "Nastiest Half" rated 9" trail ends. Continue working the way up the canyon to get to "3-Monkeys," an obstacle that has 3 different optional lines. The left monkey is an off-camber slick rock wall, the middle monkey is a vertical climb up a wall and into a v-notch, and the right monkey, which is probably the easiest, is an up and over rock face. This is immediately followed by a long notch climb with a large hole in the middle. Rollover or axle breaks are somewhat common at this point, as it requires good tire placement and keeping the passenger rear up on the wall and out of the hole. There are three more major obstacles the along the trail "The Crack on Milts" which is just what it sounds like. "Hard Right Turn" a tight right climb to turn left. And "Hard Left Turn" a tight slot with a hard driver turn to get up a three-foot vertical wall. At this point the trail turns east and exits out to the main dunes. Cell service is typically good except when deep in the canyon and the nearest services are located in Hurricane.
Difficulty
Trail consists of rock, sand, and considerable slickrock with many steps exceeding 48". Steep inclines and declines are prevalent. Enhanced off-road equipment is required, including locking devices (front & rear), 35" tires, maximum vehicle ground clearance, and tow hooks. A winch is desirable. Excellent driving skills are required. Vehicle mechanical or body damage is likely. Rollover possibilities exist.
History
This trail was one of the first developed on Sand Mountain. Developed by Milt Thompson, a local 4x4 shop owner, he first ran it with his CJ3. Since then, the trail, and the scenery have evolved. The latest changes Milt added to the route made this trail much more challenging.
