Trail Overview

Take a leisurely drive north off Highway 14 through a meadow bordering a giant field of black lava rock. The trail takes you right up close to the lava rocks, where you can explore, touch, and see these unique porous rocks formed by volcanic activity in the area thousands of years ago. The trail continues into the trees, increasing slightly in difficulty. You will follow the trail uphill into the trees, going over lava rock and fallen trees.

Was going West to East, less than a 1/2 mile from the highway, I ran into a section that was steep downhill completely covered by basketball or bigger sized rocks. Not sure if this rating is high enough. I knew if I went down and had to turn around, I’d never get back up. I was by myself so I had to turn around.

Girlfriend and I started this trail on the southern most end and headed northwest. The first mile was fine, potholed and rutted. The second half was basketball + sized rocks and downed trees. We turned around when we came up upon a very rocky hill climb. I'm sure with an experienced spotter it could've been done in my truck. But as a solo rig we bailed. In my opinion this trail should be rated higher, at least a 4 or even a 5 based on the last hill climb.
