Trail Overview

The Gold Bar Rim trail is a popular off-road trail located in Moab, Utah, known for its challenging terrain and breathtaking views. Situated in the heart of Moab's famous off-roading region, the Gold Bar Rim trail offers stunning vistas of the surrounding red rock landscape and the Colorado River. The trail consists of rugged terrain characterized by steep ascents, descents, rock crawling sections, narrow ledges, and occasional sand pits. It's considered a difficult trail suitable for experienced off-road drivers with capable vehicles, such as UTVs, Jeeps, dirt bikes, etc. High clearance is a must. One of the highlights of the Gold Bar Rim trail is the panoramic views it provides. Drivers traverse along the rim of a deep canyon, offering spectacular overlooks of the canyon below and the surrounding desert landscape. The trail presents various challenges that require careful navigation and technical driving skills. Drivers encounter obstacles such as large boulders, tight squeezes between rock formations, and steep drop-offs. The trail demands proper vehicle preparation and attention to safety. Near the end (before it merges with Golden Spike) you will face the Golden Crack; be sure to have a spotter and pick the right line to keep the rubber side down. The Gold Bar Rim trail is approximately 15 miles long out and back from the parking lot, with a difficulty rating ranging from difficult to extreme. It typically takes several hours to complete, depending on factors such as vehicle capabilities and trail conditions. Like any off-road trail, drivers need to adhere to trail etiquette, including staying on designated routes, respecting the environment, and yielding to other trail users when necessary. Due to the challenging nature of the terrain, it's recommended to tackle the Gold Bar Rim trail with a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with off-road tires, skid plates, and recovery gear. Additionally, a capable driver with off-road experience is crucial for a safe and enjoyable journey. The trail is typically open year-round, but weather conditions can affect accessibility. Extreme heat in summer months can make the trail more challenging, while snow and ice in winter may require additional precautions. Overall, the Gold Bar Rim trail offers a thrilling off-road adventure amidst stunning natural beauty, making it a favorite among enthusiasts seeking an adrenaline-pumping experience in Moab's rugged terrain.

To add to the previous reviewer, this trail is at least a 7/10 if not 8/10. Severe ledges and drops with difficult bypasses. Major obstacles such as the gold bar waterfall will require dual lockers or a winch. Completed this with a 2024 Colorado bison on 35s, dual lockers, and fully armored, and all of it took a beating.

This trail is quite under rated, almost flipped several times, everyone in our group had to pull winch, broke a drag link. If doing this as part of the trifecta, this is the hardest section by far….. expect trifecta to be an all day/ multi day trip, we were on trail at 6am and didn’t get off until 2am the following day

Most of the trail is easy like a 4 or 5 but with the obstacle the Golden waterfall, a winch is needed. There is a sign coming from Gemini but none from the poison spider side saying this.

Thank goodness for the kindness of strangers. I feel this trail is underrated. We also did most of it at night. Be prepared for some body damage if you dont have lockers or a winch. I would like to see this trail in the daylight, because, Dang... Couldnt get up the waterfall without getting winched, I dont have lockers, but there were a few vehicles behind me, with lockers, that couldnt make it either, so I dont feel so bad.
