Trail Overview

Overall, this trail is a nice leisurely ride through North Coal Wash bottoms and some hills. It gets a bit rocky through Fix It Pass. It connects to Devil's Racetrack in the North and Cane Wash in the South. Bordered by wilderness on both sides, the route provides access to Swasey's Arch and the possibility of running into some Desert Big Horn Sheep.

Drove North to South. North approach to the pass is a 5 at least due to boulders and loose rocks for 50 yards or so. XJ with 3" lift on 31's and open diffs had no traction issues, but picking a good line is essential to not getting hung up. Classic scenery and trail make this a highlight of any Swell trip.

The one rock section. Several boulders have moved. Lots of careful tire placement and spotting. Very difficult in a full size. Experience necessary. High potential for body damage. Lots of slider and skid use. F150 34s and 2” lift. .

Beautiful views. I wish there was a way to run this trail alone instead of getting back on another trail. Normally a 4-5 rating would be appropriate but the rock wall obstacle at the Pass is in an unfixed state and has several boulders in place that were not in any of the photos or videos I reviewed. I don’t think any stock vehicle is going to make it without damage. 35” min on a short wheelbase. And 37” minimum on a long wheel base. I took a solid hit to a control arm bracket in a JKUR with 3.5” lift and 37” coming down the first boulder. You don’t need a buggy or 40”s, but clearance and a good spotter are essential.

We drove Fix It Pass from North to South after Devil's Racetrack. The wash section would be rated a 1 or 2. The rocky climb out of the wash to the top of the pass is tricky with large boulders and little room to negotiate on either side in some spots. There's one small ledge about head height along the pass climb with plenty of paint and plastic witness marks telling the story of those who didn't choose their line well. We didn't touch our plates, rock sliders, or bumpers in our Jeep JK Rubicon 4-door with a 3" lift and 35" tires, but I did use both front and rear lockers while navigating the boulders after I experienced some wheel spin and vehicle rotation. Going down would be much easier. Two SxS and a dirt bike behind me ultimately couldn't navigate the boulders and turned around. After the pass, the path becomes more 3 to 4 rated with rocky outcroppings and small ledges.

Muddy and wet in places, but overall the trail was dry and not terribly dusty.
