Trail Overview
Devils Racetrack-BLM639 is an 8.6-mile point-to-point trail rated 4 of 10 located within the San Rafael Swell. This slick rock and dirt track is the namesake for a series of trails that loop through the swell starting and ending near Interstate 70. The trail is open year-round, but may be covered in snow during winter months. The north end of the trail starts at a three-way intersection with FixIt Pass and North Coal Wash. The trail is open to all types of OHV vehicles, but is recommended for vehicles with high ground clearance. There are many scenic formations to see, with the most prominent being the Twin Priests spire formation. Depending upon direction, there are several rocky climbs or descents across rocks between 12-18 inches. Once the scenic portion of the trail runs along the western rim of the Coal Wash Canyon. The southern portion of the trail runs across open terrain. The Dutchman Arch is located near the southernmost end of the trail. There was no cell phone reception along most of the trail. The nearest services are located in Green River to the east on Interstate 70.
Difficulty
Trail consisting of loose rock, dirt, and sand with some slickrock surfaces. Some erosion; washes, gulches and rock steps no higher than 18". Tall tires (33" plus) and limited slip are a plus. 4WD is required. Enhanced suspension travel and good ground clearance are helpful. Good driving skills a plus.
