Trail Overview

Fins & Things, located in the Sand Flats Recreation Area in Moab, is accessible from the Sand Flats road. A one-day pass for private vehicles is $5, a 7-day pass is $10, and an annual pass is $25. Out of state ATVs or UTVs require a permit. OHV permits are valid for 12 months and cost $30. Passes and permits are available online only. As of January 1, 2023, all OHV operators must complete the Utah Off-Highway vehicle education course, also available online. Fins & Things features the famous "slick rock" sandstone of Moab. This is a one-way road only, and it is clearly marked. Prepare for steep climbs and descents, deep sand, and loose rocks. A challenging trail with precarious terrain, Fins and Things is recommended for experienced drivers. This is trail is a great example of what Moab has to offer.

Difficulty

The trail consists of loose rock, dirt, and sand with some slickrock surfaces. There is some erosion, in addition to washes, gulches, and rock steps no higher than 18 inches. Tall tires (33 inches or greater) and limited slip are a plus. 4WD is required. Enhanced suspension travel and good ground clearance are helpful. Good driving skills are also a plus.

Good trail. Easy to get through in a reasonable upgraded jeep water holes immediately at the bottom of steep slick rock climbs made for interesting slippage. Sand makes it smooth and the wet sand smoothed the run. The water holes at the bottom of the uphills is a challenge. Never been the Moab but it was a fun trail. Lots of SXS traffic

Hit this trail after a rainy day. Was still rainy while we ran the trail. The slick rock even wet is crazy sticky on the fins. Beware of the sand on the fins though it makes it slick, especially when its been raining. Ran just the north part of the loop due to lateness of the day. Great trail even in the dark.

Trail was awesome. Don’t pass up just because it’s raining. There is a county park guard shack before you even enter that you can ask for a live trail report if the rain has been super heavy. For us, it’s been raining the past 3 days. I think the slick rock we got better traction, but yes there are muddy spots that are not bad. One spot near the end of the trail has a deep water hole with an immediate uphill climb. Again we did Kenny’s climb in the rain too. Don’t miss out because of a little rain. Plenty of spots to be careful or have a spotter if needed but what a fantastic trail. I was in a 2022 Ford Bronco Badlands on 35”.

Good conditions with light rain, would avoid if heavy.

The south side of the trail is a fun stocker friendly 4/10 trail. The second half "north side" is definitely not a 4. Steep is an understatement. The slickrock makes it easier than it should be with excellent traction, but this is not a beginners trail. Beautiful scenery and worth the effort but choose your line based on your rig and experience level.

It was great! Only one other family in their side-by-sides and Jeeps on the trail with us. When you get to the hill with an easy and a hard way, go the easy way. The hard way had a huge drop off that we almost lost our license plate to (Zip ties are our best friend). Overall, very beautiful and challenging but nothing my Bluey couldn’t handle!

The inclines and declines look way more intimidating than they are. I was able to complete the trail with a stock two door Jeep Wrangler Sport. Take it slow, and good tire placement, and it’s completely manageable

The climbs and descents look intimidating as you approach them, once you are on them they are easy. You will be surprised at how grippy the slick rock is. There are some descents that will require careful line choice and tire placement as there are several big holes at the bottoms of the descents. The south side is a little easier and a good warm up. Only saw 1 other side by side on the whole trail and took us about an hour to complete. The sandy sections between the slick rock is nice as well.

Great trip to build confidence in machines my wife a beginner drove a stock teryx 4x4 and was able to complete the trail. Couldn’t do all of the hard obstacles (didn’t want to) but was able to take bypasses and complete the trail. We also had a 2008 Suzuki kingquad and ktm dirtbike. All made it through had had a great time.

Good day on the trail. A pretty bus day. Big group of Grenadiers out there made things a little slow, but they were cool and let us pass. Good group. Everyone was kind and supportive. Trail was a blast!

Too much for a novice - the terrain is rough (as expected) but was so busy that it didn't feel as though one had time to work their way through.

Pretty good trail for a full size truck, some obstacles seem sketchy but not too bad. I completed the trail with tent and fully loaded bed on 37s
