Trail Overview
Fins and Things is a 9.4-mile loop trail rated 4 of 10 located in Grand County, Utah. "Fins" are the Navajo Sandstone slickrock formations northeast of Moab, and the "things" are what remain as the fins erode. The fins started as wind-blown sand dunes some 200 million years ago, they got cemented into sandstone, and they are now going full circle back to sand blowing in the wind. Fins and Things trail is located in the Sand Flats Recreation Area which is a fee entry area (see image for fee schedule). A National Parks Access Pass is also valid for entry. The trail starts from the back of Campground E in the Sand Flats Recreation Area near Moab. When you stop at the booth to pay the fee, you will get a map showing the route. There are also some markings on the rocks that help in route finding. This trail offers fascinating scenery throughout, from the interesting fins to the spectacular views of the La Sal Mountains, across the sandstone domes of Sand Flats. The trail surface mostly is comprised of loose rock, dirt, and sand with some slickrock surfaces. This contrast keeps things interesting as you can find yourself suddenly changing from the added traction of slickrock to the trickier loose sand surface. Fins and Things is a trail mostly made up of steep slickrock climbs and descents with a few big ledges that could snag vehicles with long overhangs. Some of the notable sheer climbs include Frenchies Fin and Kenny's Climb. The steep gradient of the trail calls for excellent driving skills and good wheel placement. To conquer the trail with minimal problems, your ride should have enhanced suspension travel and adequate ground clearance. Cell phone service is intermittent and the nearest services are in Moab.
