Trail Overview
Echo Park Road offers an unforgettable descent into the heart of Dinosaur National Monument, making it an ideal journey for scenic overlanders and offroad enthusiasts looking to experience towering canyon walls and rich history. Starting from the paved Harpers Corner Road at an elevation of approximately 7,560 feet, this 11.6-mile unpaved route winds downward through dramatic geological formations, dropping over 2,400 feet to the canyon floor. High-clearance vehicles with four-wheel drive are highly recommended, especially to navigate the initial steep switchbacks and several shallow creek crossings. Along the way, the route offers access to the historic Chew Ranch, ancient petroglyph panels, and unique natural features like Whisper Cave, providing plenty of reasons to stop and explore.
The trail culminates at the spectacular Echo Park, where the Yampa River merges with the Green River beneath the massive, sheer facade of Steamboat Rock. The primary surface consists of dirt and gravel, which can quickly turn into impassable, slick clay mud during or after rainstorms, making dry conditions essential for a safe journey. Visitors will find a primitive campground at the end of the road. There is limited cell service and susceptibility to flash flooding, be sure to check local weather forecasts before departing.
Access Description
An entrance fee is required to enter Dinosaur National Monument. Echo Park Campground at the end of the road requires a nightly camping fee. The road is typically closed during the winter months due to snow accumulation on the high-elevation switchbacks, and it becomes completely impassable to all vehicles when wet due to thick clay mud.
