Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This mostly dirt-based route offers an easygoing drive through open desert terrain, with enough room to feel less confined than many nearby routes despite being only a single vehicle wide for most of its length. The surface is generally smooth and straightforward, making it enjoyable for drivers looking for a scenic connector rather than a technical challenge. Expansive views of the surrounding landscape and rock formations add to the experience as the trail winds across the terrain. The main point of caution comes before reaching Justin’s Hole, where the trail squeezes between the rock formation and an eroded edge above the wash. The dirt shelf remains passable, but usable width is reduced, and careful tire placement is important. Drivers must stay aware of both the rock face on one side and the drop off on the other to avoid body damage or slipping toward the edge. Wider vehicles should proceed slowly and spot if needed.

Difficulty

Most of this route is a smooth dirt trail that is suitable for most stock high-clearance SUVs and 4WD vehicles in dry conditions. The primary challenge is the narrow shelf section near Justin’s Hole, where erosion has reduced the trail width between the rock formation and the wash below. Careful tire placement and slower speeds are recommended through this area, especially for wider vehicles. Outside of that obstacle, the trail is straightforward with no major ledges, deep sand, or technical rock crawling. Wet weather could increase the difficulty due to softer edges and reduced traction.

History

The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
