Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. Traveling across the wide highlands of Dome Plateau offers a scenic and more engaging section of the larger loop before dropping into a rugged, tree-lined drainage. The route begins with broad views of the La Sal Mountains and surrounding red rock country, then transitions into rougher terrain with a mix of sand, rock, and several off-camber sections that keep drivers paying attention. Along the way, a few rock ledges add challenge, with the most notable obstacle located on a steep hill where careful tire placement is important to avoid undercarriage contact or loss of traction. The changing terrain makes this trail more than a simple connector and adds worthwhile difficulty for those looking for a bit more of a challenge. In addition, this route also provides access to lesser-known overlooks of the canyon and the Colorado River. Expect some tighter stretches between shrubs and trees where pinstriping is possible, especially for wider vehicles.

Difficulty

This route is more challenging than a basic dirt road due to its sandy and rocky surface, multiple off-camber sections, tighter brush-lined areas, and several rock ledges up to 18 inches tall. The most notable obstacle is a ledge on a steep hill where careful tire placement is important to avoid damage or loss of traction. Stock high-clearance 4WD vehicles can complete the trail, but low range, good clearance, and attentive driving are recommended.

History

Dome Plateau sits within a region shaped by erosion, mining history, and early backcountry travel routes outside Moab. Today, the trail system is popular with off-road travelers looking to experience classic red rock scenery beyond the busier in-town trails.
