Trail Overview
China Meadows (FS 80072) is a scenic, easy-rated off-road route deep in Utah’s Wasatch National Forest, ideal for overlanders, families, and beginners looking for a peaceful high-country escape. This mellow trail leads into the heart of the Evanston-Mountain View Ranger District, ending at the China Meadows campground—a great basecamp for hiking, fishing, or just soaking in the alpine surroundings.
Starting where County Road 283 transitions into Forest Service Road 80072, the trail follows a well-maintained dirt and gravel road with minimal obstacles, suitable for stock 4x4s, high-clearance AWDs, side-by-sides, and dirt bikes. While typically open from late spring through fall, conditions can shift quickly with snowmelt or summer storms, making parts of the route muddy or temporarily impassable. Keep an eye out for shallow water crossings and local wildlife—moose and bears are occasionally spotted here. With limited cell reception in this remote area, having an offline map is essential. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, FS 80072 offers a relaxed backcountry experience with easy access to the China Meadows trailhead and its surrounding wilderness.
