Trail Overview

Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. Box Flat delivers a true sense of isolation, feeling like you’ve stepped into a remote, private corner of the San Rafael Swell. The trail begins tight and narrow, weaving through trees before transitioning into a more technical, rocky section reminiscent of Moab-style terrain, where slow speeds and careful tire placement are key. After working through these early obstacles, the route opens up into a wide, grassy prairie framed by striking sandstone cliffs and buttes. The contrast between the rugged entry and the calm, open landscape makes this trail especially rewarding. As you continue, the path follows a sandy two-track across active ranching land, so expect cattle in the area and drive accordingly. The route loops around unique rock formations and offers a few small, dispersed campsites along with access to a remote hiking trail. One notable challenge is a deep washout that changes over time due to weather and traffic, requiring drivers to assess conditions before crossing. Overall, Box Flat blends light technical driving with scenic cruising, offering a peaceful yet engaging backcountry experience.

Difficulty

The initial narrow sections through trees and Moab-like rocky terrain require careful tire placement, 4WD with 4lo range, and good ground clearance, especially over the rock steps. The difficulty is increased by a changing washout that can become more challenging depending on recent weather and erosion. Once past these obstacles, the trail opens into easier sandy and grassy sections, but the early features are enough to keep this from being considered a beginner trail.

History

The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
