Trail Overview
Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. Big Flat offers a wide open experience across the heart of the San Rafael Swell, trading the maintained gravel of Green River Cutoff for a more natural and engaging backcountry route. The trail winds through expansive high desert meadows and ranching terrain, with long stretches of two-track cutting across rolling prairie and unobstructed views of Cedar Mountain in the distance. While much of the route feels easy and fast-moving, scattered challenges keep it from being a simple cruise. Deep washouts and uneven erosion cuts require drivers to slow down, pick careful lines, and use 4WD in select sections. The terrain varies between sandy soil, hard-packed dirt, and embedded rock, making traction generally good but unpredictable during or after wet weather conditions. This route is ideal for those looking to cover ground while still experiencing the raw landscape, offering a balance of scenic cruising and light technical driving without becoming overly demanding.
Difficulty
Big Flat is mostly a straightforward route, with long stretches of smooth two-track across open terrain, making it very approachable for stock high clearance 4x4s. The difficulty comes from scattered deep washouts, erosion cuts, and a few mild rocky climbs that may require low range and careful line choice. These obstacles are short-lived but enough to keep drivers engaged, especially after rain when conditions can change. Overall, it’s an ideal route for those looking for a relaxed backcountry route.
