Trail Overview
Non-Resident OHV permits apply to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Plated street-legal vehicles typically do not need one on legal motorized routes. This easy spur trail offers a quiet and less-traveled route with partial views into Cow Canyon and Buckhorn Wash, making it a great option for those looking to escape the busier main roads. The trail is primarily dirt and sand, remaining mostly smooth but narrow, with trees lining both sides in several sections that can make the route feel tighter than it is. It is only one vehicle wide for the entire length, so awareness of surroundings is important. Along the way, there are camping opportunities that provide a more secluded experience away from busier areas. At the end, the trail reaches a roundabout where it transitions into a smaller ATV-only route, clearly marked. Do not continue past this point with a full-size vehicle. While it does not reach the absolute edge of the canyon viewpoints, the surrounding scenery and mountain views on the way out still make this a worthwhile and peaceful drive.
Difficulty
This is a simple dirt and sand trail with no major obstacles, suitable for most 4WD and 2WD vehicles in dry conditions. The primary challenge is the narrow, one vehicle-wide path with trees encroaching on both sides, which can lead to pinstriping and requires careful driving. The trail is otherwise smooth, with minimal technical features.
History
The San Rafael Swell is a massive geologic uplift shaped by erosion into canyons, mesas, domes, and reefs. Many roads in the region were later used for ranching, mining, and energy exploration, creating the access routes travelers still use today.
