Trail Overview
BLM 106E is a highly scenic, 2.1-mile backcountry sand two-track that treats explorers to some of the most dramatic geological views in the region. As the vividly colored red-sand path playfully winds its way through a dense high-desert landscape heavily populated by mature green juniper trees and thick sagebrush, drivers are constantly rewarded with spectacular, sweeping vistas of the magnificent Diana's Throne and the towering white stone cliffs looming in the adjacent distance. The journey naturally dictates a slow and deliberate driving pace, largely due to the persistently deep sand that defines the winding corridor. Along this beautifully immersive transit, backcountry travelers will discover multiple flat, highly inviting dispersed campsites perfectly positioned for an isolated overnight retreat. Notably, one of these premium clearings is situated directly below the massive face of Diana's Throne itself, offering an unforgettable, world-class destination for wilderness camping.
Difficulty
BLM 106E firmly earns a Level 3 Moderate technical rating, a score dictated entirely by its exceptionally soft, deep red-sand surface. Like most of the rugged trails navigating this specific area, successfully maintaining essential forward momentum without bogging down in the deep ruts absolutely requires a high-clearance vehicle equipped with a capable four-wheel-drive system. Dropping your tire air pressures before leaving the pavement is strictly necessary to maximize flotation and to simultaneously help smooth out the bone-rattling vibrations caused by several sections featuring major, corrugated washboard. Furthermore, because the winding trail weaves so tightly between rigid juniper branches and large sage bushes, noticeable cosmetic pinstriping is highly likely for any rig larger than a mid-size vehicle.
