Trail Overview
Fittingly nicknamed "Shaken Not Stirred," BLM 103S is a highly scenic but distinctly bumpy 3.4-mile backcountry two-track that serves as an unforgettable high-desert transit. The vividly colored, deeply tracked red-sand route playfully meanders through a dense landscape heavily populated by mature green juniper trees and thick, rustic sagebrush under a brilliant blue sky. As off-roaders bob and weave through this winding corridor, the trail gracefully guides them directly toward the base of the magnificent, towering white sandstone cliffs that beautifully dominate the dramatic horizon. The surrounding environment is highly fragile, featuring a considerable abundance of delicate cryptobiotic soils scattered throughout the brush; explorers must strictly stay on the designated path to properly "tiptoe through the crypto" and preserve the living desert crust. While the sweeping landscape views are undeniably breathtaking, drivers should anticipate a persistently rough ride, as the trail is heavily defined by unrelenting, bone-rattling washboard surfaces that will vibrate the entire vehicle.
Difficulty
BLM 103S firmly earns a Level 3 Moderate technical rating due to a combination of unrelenting washboard, exceptionally deep sand, and a specific climbing exit. Throughout the 3.4-mile route, off-roaders will repeatedly encounter deeply carved sand ruts that absolutely require a high-clearance vehicle to safely navigate without dragging or high-centering the undercarriage. Additionally, successfully powering up the distinctly soft sandy climb out requires steady momentum, a reliable 4WD system, and lowered tire air pressures. Because the twisting track frequently brushes against the rigid juniper trees, light cosmetic pinstriping along the side panels should be completely expected for any rig midsize and above. Drastically lowering your tire pressures is also highly recommended to take the harsh edge off the persistently corrugated washboard surface.
