Trail Overview
7-Up is a short but entertaining 4.9 mile 4WD trail that delivers a great mix of mild technical driving and classic Moab scenery. Suitable for a stock high-clearance 4x4, the route begins on sandy two-track before working through rocky sections with ledges up to 12 inches tall that can challenge longer, lower-clearance vehicles. Durable off-road tires are recommended for the sharper rocks and uneven terrain. Along the way, drivers cross sections of slickrock sandstone where painted lines mark the proper route, helping keep travel on designated surfaces. Within the first two miles, look high above the trail to spot a hidden natural arch tucked into the cliffs. The trail also passes through open meadows surrounded by colorful red rock backdrops, creating a scenic contrast to the rocky obstacles. Camping is not allowed along the northern portion near Old Arth’s Road, but camping is permitted near the southern end of the route.
Difficulty
7-Up is a moderate trail that is very manageable for a stock high-clearance 4x4, but it includes enough obstacles to require careful tire placement and low-speed driving. Expect rocky sections, uneven terrain, and rock ledges up to 12 inches tall. Slickrock sandstone sections are straightforward when following the painted route markers, but traction and attention are still important.
History
7-Up is known primarily as a popular mountain bike route, but the 4WD section offers shared access through the same scenic terrain. Like many Moab routes, it blends recreation with the area’s long history of travel across sandstone benches, desert meadows, and rugged canyon country.
