Trail Overview

Old Ore Road is located within the remote wilderness of Big Bend National Park. Old Ore is one of the only trails (if not the only) within Big Bend where cell service is somewhat available, except for a few valleys and canyons. This trail is great for beginners, as it traverses many types of terrain, from rocks, soft sand, ruts, and gravel. Keep in mind this road is extremely bumpy, rough, and rocky. Water does tend to pool up on the trail; when it is raining, the trail becomes nearly impassable if one's tires are not up to par. You will be going in and out of arroyos and up hills with water running down. Old Ore provides many remote primitive campgrounds which all require a permit beforehand. There is no shade anywhere on the trail and summers in Texas are not polite, so plan accordingly.

Difficulty

The entirety of the trail is one track with very few places to pass others if the opportunity presents itself. There are a few ledges on steep grades, however most of them have been filled with rocks by others, making the trip easier. There are a few spots with soft sand in the arroyos; water also fills up in these locations along with many spots along the road.

History

This trail was used in the early 1900s by miners to transport ore from Mexico to the nearby town of Marathon some 90 miles north of the park.

Was a fun day but be warned it’s pretty washed out in some places the south end is probably the gnarliest but overall plenty passable if you have a Jeep or Bronco or similar capability. Pictures don’tPersonally I wouldn’t have gone bashing my full size truck up that trail but I passed a Ram and Tundra who both seemed to be having fun. Take your time out there. It’s a cool run.

Pretty easy trailer some 4hi needed for for climbing some rocks, recommend airing down for a smoother ride

Overall within the capabilities of a stock wrangler. One scramble that I spun on briefly but no scraping. Minimal pinstriping.

We found several interesting obstacles and many great vistas to pull over and savor. There were several ledges and rocky areas that I would not recommend traversing with an all wheel drive…

Multiple rough rocky sections and washouts. A few sections have rocky ledges with drop offs. Climbs with very loose crushed rock and/or sand. Was a fun experience for our first time offroad in the van, especially at night.

Old Ore Road is now completely open after having been closed for several months. Road condition is similar to what it has always been. Fun and moderately challenging.

Should probably be rated higher than a 3/10 when compared to the other trails in the area that are much easier and also rated as 3/10. A few tricky spots and if your in a full size you’ll likely hit toward the back of the vehicle when dropping down and going back up washed out creek crossings; my fathers f150 tremor had this issue. But there were never any spots I was worried about getting stuck or damaging our vehicles.

I did this trail in a four wheel drive stock 2008 Tahoe. The trail is very rough with large divots located on the inclines. I was on three wheels occasionally going downhill at least once. Four wheel drive is required because of the loose stone and gravel climbs. There are deep ruts at the north end and I had to choose the pinstriping option to avoid getting high centered. Don't expect to speed run this one unless you have a modified suspension, it gets real rough in places. Large tires and good suspension travel is not a must but will help. Smart throttle control is required.

Good Trail, if you are going at night expect 4+ hours to complete the whole trail! Slow speed, some wash outs. Overall great time, just took way longer than expected

Great road to test your suspension. There is nothing technical and I did not need 4 wheel drive. I just aired down. We traveled south to north and it took us under 4 hours to drive the 26 miles. We took our time and only ran into a couple folks. One of our favorite overland trail roads.
