Trail Overview
River Road East is a 9.9-mile backcountry dirt road in the southern section of Big Bend National Park, running between Talley Road and Park Route 12. This remote route provides access to primitive campsites, the historic Mariscal Mine, and the southern terminus of Black Gap Road. The driving surface consists of dirt, gravel, and loose rock with frequent dry wash crossings that require a high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The route offers wide views of the Chisos Mountains and surrounding desert. Travelers should prepare for potential washouts and sudden flash floods. Backcountry permits are required for all overnight camping along the trail.
History
The route passes near the historic Mariscal Mine, which was the premier quicksilver (mercury) mining operation in the region during the early 20th century. Active primarily between 1919 and 1923, and again during World War II, the site is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features well-preserved ruins of the Condenser Building, kilns, and shafts.
Access Description
An entrance fee or valid interagency pass is required to enter Big Bend National Park. All backcountry campsites along River Road East require a backcountry permit, which must be secured in advance via Recreation.gov or at a park visitor center. High-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended due to deep gravel, washouts, and rocky terrain. Four-wheel drive may be necessary, particularly after heavy rains when flash floods can quickly make the road impassable.
