Trail Overview

Kelly’s Pond Road (FS 271) travels through a low-lying, wooded section of Sam Houston National Forest and serves as a primary access route to nearby forest land and water features. The road is mostly dirt with scattered gravel and may remain uneven or damp in places depending on recent weather. Numerous established clearings along the route are commonly used for primitive dispersed camping, many with existing fire rings. Picnic tables and restroom facilities are located near the Kelly’s Pond Trailhead, providing limited amenities before heading farther into the forest. This road offers direct access to Kelly’s Pond Trail 818, resulting in increased foot and riding traffic near the trailhead area. In dry conditions, most high-clearance vehicles can travel the route without issue, though standing water and softer ground may be present after rain. Expect shared forest use and limited cell service.
