Trail Overview
Boca Chica Beach sits at the southern tip of Texas near Brownsville, where the Rio Grande meets the Gulf of Mexico at the U.S.–Mexico border. This remote Gulf Coast beach offers a mix of sand driving, coastal scenery, jetty access, and wide-open views that feel similar to Padre Island National Seashore or South Padre Island, but with a more rugged, less-developed atmosphere.
The main beach access is via State Highway 4, which ends near the Gulf and provides the primary route to Boca Chica Beach. From the south end of the beach, you can look across the mouth of the Rio Grande toward Mexico. Trails and sandy travel routes are generally found along the beach itself and near the northwestern section by the jetties, where drivers should watch for changing sand conditions, tides, soft spots, and other beach traffic.
One of the most unique things about visiting Boca Chica Beach is passing SpaceX Starbase on the way in. The Starship launch and testing facility sits near the entrance to the beach, making this one of the only coastal off-road destinations where you may see rocket infrastructure on your drive to the sand. However, SpaceX operations can also cause temporary closures of Boca Chica Beach and State Highway 4, so always check current beach and road access before heading out. Starbase now maintains a beach and road access page with active closure information, and Cameron County has historically posted Boca Chica closure updates as well.
