Trail Overview

Upper Briar Creek (FS 4354) is a moderately easy trail that offers a mix of terrain features and gradually becomes more rugged as you progress. The route begins as a single-lane trail with scattered ruts, protruding rocks, and occasional sandy sections. Several mud holes are present throughout, which can become deeper and more challenging after rainfall. Passing and turnaround opportunities are limited, so drivers should remain aware of oncoming traffic and plan accordingly. The trail intersects with the Buffalo Mountain ATV trail at multiple points and provides access to several nearby hiking areas, so expect occasional mixed-use traffic. Around one mile in, the route reaches the East Tennessee Natural Gas high-pressure line. A gated area sits off to the side—do not enter—but continuing on the main trail requires crossing a deteriorated concrete slab. A dirt bypass exists to the right, and while the obstacle is not extreme, it does require attention. Beyond the gas line, the trail becomes less maintained, narrower, and more overgrown. Drivers will encounter increased rutting, tighter tree spacing, and a higher likelihood of pinstriping from branches and vegetation. Around 1.5 miles in, an off-camber section adds another element of challenge. Turnaround opportunities become very limited past the gas line, making it a natural decision point for those who prefer to avoid tighter and rougher terrain. The trail is an out-and-back and becomes impassable beyond the mapped endpoint, so drivers should plan to turn around before continuing too far.

Difficulty

Upper Briar Creek (FS 4354) is rated a 2 due to its combination of uneven terrain, scattered ruts, protruding rocks, and multiple mud holes that can vary in depth depending on conditions. While none of the obstacles are extreme on their own, they introduce consistent minor challenges typical of an unmaintained dirt road. The deteriorated concrete slab crossing near the gas line, along with the optional dirt bypass, adds a small obstacle but does not significantly increase difficulty. The off-camber section further into the trail requires attention but remains manageable under normal conditions. The tightening trail corridor, increased rutting, and overgrowth beyond the gas line contribute to a slightly more demanding driving experience, though still within the scope of a Level 2 trail. Overall, the sustained experience reflects an unmaintained dirt road with minor obstacles under 12 inches, suitable for most 4WD and high-clearance 2WD vehicles, with 4WD recommended in wet or muddy conditions.
