Trail Overview

Rich Mountain Summit is the legal continuation of Rich Mountain Trail which has seasonal closures typically from December 20 through late March and is considered an 'out and back' experience. The Rich Mountain Summit Trail begins by taking a 90-degree right turn and passing through a Forest Service gate. There is a small, initial climb passing through the gate. This section is known to be slightly more challenging due to less maintenance, narrow sections, wet slick red clay, as well as long, steep, rutted, hill climbs. Therefore, this trail is best suited for Jeeps/midsized vehicles. Full-size vehicles will find this section far more challenging to manage and therefore are not recommended. There will be opportunities along the climb to enjoy scenic views of the surrounding mountains off to the left and right sides of the trail as it winds toward the top. Depending upon the time of year, there are various flowers and berries which the active wildlife enjoy. Once at the summit, reaching over 3800 feet, there is a small field with significant overgrowth to the right of the trail and a nice, flat, area with a wooded backdrop to rest or camp on the left. Rich Mountain Summit Trail continues past the campsite, heading down the other side of the mountain. Although there are deteriorated sections along the trail, they remain passable in stock 4x4 vehicles. There are gated fields along the sides of the trail intended for nature conservation and not for off-road use or public entry. Rich Mountain Summit Trail officially ends in a large open section with a gate toward the left corner, leading to Mill Creek Road. This gate is permanently closed given it crosses through private property. It will appear that Rich Mountain Summit continues on to the right. However, this section is not a legal part of the trail, is not maintained, and to continue past this point is considered off-trail, please tread lightly and avoid any trespassing.

Difficulty

The Rich Mountain Summit section tends to receive less maintenance resulting in greater trail deterioration during the course of the open season. A more narrow trail combined with significant gains in elevation over such a short distance result in steep, rutted, and off-camber hill climbs requiring increased attention and actual use of 4WD to navigate.

After the fact on turning from Bumpas on to Rich Mountain Summit I recognized the reviews below are spot on. This trail says a 3 however with the amount of rain that has recently occurred this trail is easily a 5 as suggested by others. Expect large mud holes, slick rocks, and towards the end the end of the trail higher clearance 4x4 is necessary due to the rock shelf climb. Fun trail. Though Expect minor pinstriping and check weather conditions to ensure you have the proper rig for this trail due to noted Hill climb and changing trail conditions.

Fun trail. Gas enough technicality to be enjoyable but not enough to overwhelm most off-road vehicles. We had 4 jeeps that ranged in mods. Everything from a 3 inch lift on 35’s all the way down to a bone stock Sahara and nobody encountered any issues. I could see if it was raining it could get good and messy but it had been fairly dry for a few days.

Steep trail going in and coming out. We did encounter a couple of trees across the trail that we cut. I run 29 inch tires and was able to successfully navigate the trail though the very last mud hole, before you get to the clearing at the top, is deeper than it looks. Like others have said, if the trail is very dry it’s probably more a three if it’s very wet, it could be much worse. I found it a fun trail and a good challenge for my stock 69 Scout.

Much more tight and technical than Bumpus Cove, rutted bad in spots, few deep mud holes, several sections that were steep and rocky. Gave this one a 4 but depending on the day, could be and 3 or if wet, maybe even a 5.

After starting off on Bumpus getting to Rich Mtn, once I passed through the gate on Rich Mtn, it was narrower and I could tell right away the trail would be more interesting as far as technicality. Nothing crazy at all but some mud pits, trees down to navigate around or over the smaller ones, and rocky sections. I’d rate it at a 3. If it was muddy it could definitely be a 4 or maybe more on returning back ascending those steeper rocky sections. Hitting a bunch of mud before getting up those would definitely make things more interesting. A good day out with Frank. Did all of both trails (Bumpus and Rich Mtn).

It was clear but scraping with high center on 35’s set to 17psi, aired up to 37psi before heading back down and had no issues. Other than that it was a good ride.
