Trail Overview
Pine Bald Trail is a demanding backcountry OHV route intended for experienced riders who are comfortable navigating steep, unmaintained terrain in the Royal Blue Unit of the North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area in Tennessee. Beginning near Wheeler Gap in Campbell County, the trail winds south along the slopes surrounding Pine Bald before climbing toward Grave Gap, offering a rugged ride through remote forested ridgelines typical of the Cumberland Plateau. The surface is primarily dirt and clay with scattered rocky sections, and because the route receives limited maintenance, riders should expect uneven terrain, deep ruts, and shifting lines created by erosion and runoff. The trail's high difficulty rating comes from a combination of sustained climbs, off-camber sections, and narrow stretches along the Pine Bald ridgeline that require careful throttle control and confident handling. Open to ATVs, 4x4s and off-highway vehicles; and managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Pine Bald Trail is generally accessible year-round, though weather can dramatically affect trail conditions. Rainfall often softens the clay-heavy soil and exposes additional rock, making climbs toward Grave Gap more technical and increasing the likelihood of deep ruts and slick surfaces. Riders may also encounter debris or washouts due to runoff along the ridge. The remote setting and limited maintenance mean that emergency access can be restricted in some sections, so preparation and awareness are important before attempting the route. As the trail gains elevation toward Grave Gap, riders move through dense Appalachian hardwood forest with occasional openings along the ridge that highlight the rugged terrain surrounding Pine Bald.

Difficulty
Pine Bald Trail is rated a 3/10 because it has light obstacles but remains accessible for most capable 4x4 vehicles. The main challenges are a few mild inclines and descents, loose stones in some sections, and small water holes that can usually be bypassed. The trail does not have major technical obstacles, but drivers should still be prepared for uneven surfaces and changing conditions.
