Trail Overview
Cross Mountain Trail is one of the main routes through the Royal Blue Riding Area, stretching across the mountain and serving as a major connector for much of the trail system. Rated a 3/10, it is one of the longer trails in the area and can be completed by smaller 4x4 SUVs with good ground clearance, making it a solid option for drivers looking for a scenic mountain route without stepping into highly technical terrain. This is a two-way trail that travels through a wide variety of terrain, including some narrower sections that require drivers to stay alert for oncoming traffic. The trail features many steep grades, with some climbs and descents reaching up to 22%. These hills can be made more challenging by loose rock and running water, which is often present year-round due to natural springs in the area. There are also a number of spots with standing water, and while some can be fairly deep, most have a route around them. A permit is required to ride this trail as part of the Royal Blue Riding Area. Be sure to verify current riding area regulations, confirm your vehicle is allowed, and obtain the proper permit before heading out.

Difficulty
Cross Mountain Trail is rated a 3/10 because its obstacles are moderate but consistent. The main challenges come from steep grades up to 22%, loose rock on climbs and descents, and water that can be present on the trail for much of the year due to springs. Standing water can also deepen after rain, though most of the deeper spots have a bypass. While the trail is manageable for smaller 4x4 SUVs with decent ground clearance, the combination of narrow sections, two-way traffic, and slick or rocky hill climbs means drivers should still use caution and good line choice. It is not an extreme trail, but conditions can make certain sections more demanding than the rating suggests.
