66 - Caryville Flats

Caryville Flats, also designated as Trail 66, offers an exceptionally scenic, easy-going ridge top drive that is perfect for families, beginners, and anyone looking to enjoy the expansive mountain vistas of Windrock Park. Spanning roughly 1.5 miles at an elevation of around 2,900 feet near McGhee Gap, this relatively level route provides a relaxing break from the park's more technical terrain while still delivering incredible high-country scenery. Stock high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, ATVs, and dirt bikes will easily navigate this trail under normal conditions, making it one of the most accessible areas in the entire trail system. The terrain primarily consists of dirt and gravel, though drivers should be prepared for various mud holes that can accumulate deep water after heavy rains. While the main path remains flat and straightforward with a technical rating of 2, the area is surrounded by more challenging, unlabeled offshoot trails rated as difficult and most difficult for those seeking a test of their rigs. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, as Caryville Flats is well-known for frequent sightings of wild boar and the Cumberland elk herd, particularly around dusk. To reach this scenic clearing, Windrock Park management recommends taking Trail G54 and connecting to Trail 62, which leads directly to the flats. Land use permits from Windrock Park are required to access this trail, and all visitors must comply with park safety regulations, including helmet requirements for open-air vehicles.
