Trail Overview

Sage Creek Rim Road is an accessible, scenic dirt and gravel route ideal for stock vehicles, overland rigs, and passenger cars seeking sweeping vistas of Badlands National Park. Running along the rim of the Sage Creek Basin, this well-maintained corridor offers stunning overlooks of rugged sandstone formations, deep canyons, and vast mixed-grass prairies. Drivers can expect a low-stress journey with multiple roadside pullouts designed for soaking in the scenery and spotting the area's iconic wildlife, including bison, bighorn sheep, pronghorn, and active prairie dog towns. Because the road is composed of graded dirt and gravel, it is highly accessible to all street-legal vehicle types, including passenger cars, stock SUVs, and SxSs, under dry conditions, making it an ideal entry-point excursion for families and scenic tourers. While the terrain is generally straightforward with a low technical difficulty, wet weather can quickly transform the bentonite clay-heavy soil into slick, sticky mud that may challenge two-wheel-drive vehicles. Offroaders should check local weather forecasts before heading out, as heavy rain can occasionally lead to temporary route closures or slippery conditions. The road connects Highway 240 on the east end near the Pinnacles Overlook to Sage Creek Road on the west, providing seamless access to the Sage Creek Campground and various hiking opportunities deeper within the park. This route serves as a perfect connector for a longer overland trip through western South Dakota or a relaxed afternoon drive through some of the state's most dramatic badlands topography.

Trail was well groomed. Gravel. Busy travel with lots of vehicles. Lots of places to stop for overlooks. The trail actually goes further then what is on onX Offroad.

This is simply a 2 lane gravel road. You will see bison and prairie dogs up close along with a view of the west side of the Badlands.
