Trail Overview

This is a fun two-track dirt trail that gives you a glimpse into the grasslands and Badlands most people don't get to experience. You may encounter lots of prairie dogs and large herds of antelope. Do not attempt this trail if it is raining/snowing or if there has been moisture in the last week;it will appear dry, but there will be very sticky clay beneath. You will pass through 5 gates which are closed (make sure to close them behind you) and one cattle guard at the entrance/exit to the trail as it meets the highway.

Difficulty

This is a quite easy two-track dirt trail, but there are a couple of spots where you cross small creek and drainage areas where you will need high clearance. Do not attempt this trail if it is raining/snowing or if there has been moisture in the last week. The top looks dry but underneath there is very soft and sticky clay mud. You may need 4H in a couple of small spots.

Fun easy drive. We thought the gates were locked at first but they weren’t. Once you open one gate you’ll understand how the work. Not your typical cattle gate.

Trail was far more interesting than it appears on the map. I was expecting a straight dirt road, but it actually has plenty of small creek crossings and hills. The most scenic portion is at the far north of the trail, by the national park. There was a dry creek bed that made for a good lunch spot. The southern half of the trail was dry and hard-packed. The northern half was mostly dry, but with some very muddy areas. The worst areas were at the far northern section of the trail. I would heed the advice and not drive this if there has been rain. I almost got stuck in a few places. I was happy to have my maxtrax, but I did not need them. The mud is very slick and dense, like clay.

Dry, but one water crossing got a little washed out. Was able to make it passed without too much trouble. Higher approach angle or shovel will be needed.
