Palmer - FS 356

This trail is an excellent connector between Old Hill City Road and Highway 244, making it a convenient route that can save both time and miles compared to traveling the paved roads between the two. For the most part, the trail is easy to navigate and suitable for most high-clearance vehicles. While much of the route is relatively smooth, there are a few sections where four-wheel drive and additional ground clearance are beneficial. The trail surface is primarily dirt with a few rutted areas that can become muddy after rain. You'll encounter a handful of rocky hills along the way, but there are no major rock obstacles that require technical driving. Overall, it's an enjoyable trail that offers a relaxing drive through the Black Hills without being overly challenging. There are several dispersed camping opportunities along the north portion of the trail. However, camping is not permitted on the south end of the trail according to the official Forest Service map. If you plan to camp, be sure to verify that you're in an area where dispersed camping is allowed and always follow current Forest Service regulations. Overall, this is a worthwhile trail for anyone looking to connect destinations while enjoying a scenic drive through the forest. It's an easy route with just enough variety to keep it interesting and is well worth adding to your Black Hills itinerary. As always, stay on designated trails, respect camping regulations, and practice Leave No Trace by packing out everything you bring in and leaving only footprints.
