Trail Overview
New Moon Road heading toward Rudenvale is a quiet, scenic ride through classic Black Hills country--gravel surface, lightly traveled, and surrounded by big pines and open ridges. It's one of those routes that feels like it belongs in a storybook: peaceful, remote, and perfect for folks looking to slip off the grid for a bit. There are a few nice pullouts for dispersed camping along the way, especially in the saddles between ridgelines where the forest opens up. Wildlife is active out here--whitetail and mule deer, turkeys, and plenty of smaller critters keep the place moving, especially near water draws and clearings. This stretch sees some use during big game seasons, but outside of fall, you're likely to have it all to yourself. Geologically, this zone transitions between the Minnelusa and Pahasapa formations--expect exposed limestone, sandstone benches, and good drainage along the ridges. The terrain offers solid visibility and is part of a broader upland system that eventually feeds into Castle and Cold Brook Creek systems to the west and south. Pack in, pack out, leave no trace, and tread lightly.
