Trail Overview
Stots Ridge is a rugged, lesser-known route that runs the spine of a long ridgeline in the southern Black Hills. It's a mix of gravel and dirt depending on the stretch, with rolling terrain that dips in and out of pine forest and scattered meadow. The vibe out here is peaceful and remote--exactly what you'd want if you're looking to escape the crowds. There's excellent dispersed camping along the ridge itself. A few of the high points have flat spots with big views, enough room for multiple rigs if you're traveling with a group. You'll catch some solid sunsets up here, and on clear nights, the stars go off--no light pollution, just silence and sky. Stots Ridge sees light use during deer and elk season--lots of game trails crisscrossing the slopes, and the mix of timber and open ground makes it a prime glassing zone. Geologically, you're riding the high edges of Minnelusa sandstone and limestone layers, with pockets of shale and red dirt in the cuts. It's dry and well-drained, though things can get slick if it's rained recently. Pack in, pack out, leave no trace, and tread lightly.
