Trail Overview
Fox Two Road is a short spur off Merrill Road in Moshannon State Forest, approximately 1 mile driven out and back. It is an unmaintained state forest drivable trail, tight and one vehicle wide, rather than a graded forest road, and it is one of the most difficult trails in this part of the forest. The turn is easy to miss, and the spur sees very little traffic. The trail holds water year-round, and the trees have grown in close along it. This is a high-clearance 4x4 trail, and good tires matter. Two-wheel-drive and low-clearance vehicles should not attempt it. Fox Two Road ends at private camp roads. Lease posts 751 and 700 mark where the state forest trail ends and camp leases begin. Do not drive past them. There is room to turn around before the posts.
Difficulty
Mud holes and ruts run up to a foot deep for most of the length, and the holes can be over 18 inches after heavy rain. They do not dry out, so the mud is there in spring, summer, and fall alike rather than only after rain. Rock ledges of about 6 inches step across the trail here and there, nothing a high-clearance 4x4 will struggle with, and rocks sit submerged in some of the holes where they have to be driven over. Those cannot be seen from the surface but are well under 12 inches. The mud is the difficulty, not the rock. Sections sit off camber, and there are limited places to pull off.
