Trail Overview

Surprise is a short, natural surface, single-lane road with no turnouts. It is overgrown in spots and you will get pinstripes. A part of this road is very technical and requires a four-wheel drive short wheelbase. It is a washed-out section that becomes very hard to do in wet situations, with a bit of a short climb and a big dip that if done in a long wheelbase will rub the bumper. The road ends at Hardesty Trailhead - Upper which leads to the Hardesty Lookout Tower.

There was a couple sections of snow 6" to 8" deep. Xterra handled it fine. Walked the trail to where the Hardesty Lookout tower once stood. It operated from 1920 into the '60s. Not much to see but the trail system has been thru there since the early 20th century so that's cool. Other than that not much to speak about. I doubt I would go back.
