Trail Overview
Surprise is a short, challenging off-road route in the Willamette National Forest designed for drivers of short-wheelbase four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs seeking a tight, forested adventure. Stretching approximately 1.7 miles, this narrow, single-lane dirt trail climbs from an elevation of 3,231 feet to a peak of 3,856 feet, gaining about 654 feet along the way. Because there are no turnouts and the surrounding brush is overgrown, travelers should expect heavy brush scraping and inevitable paint pinstriping. The route contains a highly technical, washed-out section with a steep climb and a deep dip that will easily scrape the bumpers of longer-wheelbase rigs, making a nimble vehicle setup essential.
This natural-surface trail demands extra caution during wet weather, as rain or snow can make the washed-out obstacles exceptionally slick and difficult to negotiate. The trail is typically unmaintained following inclement weather, which increases the likelihood of encountering downed trees or muddy washouts. Navigating to the end of the route brings drivers to the Hardesty Trailhead - Upper, providing direct access to the Hardesty Trail which leads up to the historic Hardesty Lookout Tower site. Given the technical rating of 4, drivers should ensure their four-wheel-drive systems are fully functional and prepare for tight, technical maneuvers in a secluded mountain setting.

This narrow, single-lane trail is unmaintained after rain or snow, which can result in downed trees and slick, muddy washouts. It is highly recommended for short-wheelbase four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs only; longer-wheelbase rigs will likely scrape their bumpers on steep dips and washed-out sections. There are no vehicle turnouts along the route, and tight, overgrown brush will scrape vehicle paint.
