Trail Overview
Stonehouse Road is a scenic, moderately challenging climb perfect for intermediate four-wheel-drive enthusiasts looking to explore the rugged eastern slopes of the Steens Mountain range. Starting from Fields-Folly Farm Road (Harney County Road 201) at an elevation of 4,124 feet, this 2.8-mile trail ascends through a picturesque canyon carved by Stonehouse Creek, gaining 1,617 feet of elevation before ending near Smyth Ranch Road at 5,741 feet. Along the route, drivers will navigate a rocky surface, several water crossings, and muddy sections, all while taking in views of unique moss walls where water seeps from the canyon sides. This route is suitable for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and ATVs prepared for off-camber sections and loose, steep climbs.
As the trail climbs deeper into the canyon, drivers should be prepared for long, loose hill climbs with pitches up to 17 degrees that demand careful tire placement and steady momentum. Cell service is extremely limited, with only sporadic LTE coverage, making offline maps and self-recovery gear essential for a safe trip. The trail is not winter-maintained, and snow and ice often block passage starting in mid-October, with drifts sometimes remaining impassable until June or July. Because of these high-altitude conditions, the optimal time to tackle this route is from mid-summer through early autumn when the creek crossings are manageable and the path is dry.
Difficulty
Water crossings, Muddy sections, Off Camber sections, and steep Long Hill Climbs. At the time of recording, progress was stopped by snowy Icy trail conditions in Mid October. No winter maintenance. May take until June or July to melt off enough.
