Trail Overview
Mann Lake North Gate is a rugged, short out-and-back trail ideal for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and ATVs looking to explore the scenic juniper-covered foothills near Mann Lake, Oregon. Starting from the valley floor at an elevation of approximately 4,266 feet, this 1.1-mile route quickly climbs up a canyon, gaining about 536 feet in elevation before topping out around 4,802 feet. The terrain begins gently as you traverse grassy flats, but it rapidly transitions into a dense juniper forest where the trail narrows significantly. Offroaders should be prepared for tight squeezes and low-hanging branches that are highly likely to cause paint damage or "trail stripes" on full-size rigs.
As the track ascends deeper into the hills, the trail surface becomes increasingly technical, featuring embedded boulders and sharp rocks that pose a high risk of tire sidewall damage. The trail eventually narrows down to ATV width just past a prime dispersed camping area, making it impassable for larger four-wheel-drive vehicles. There are several primitive campsites with fire rings along the route, offering peaceful spots to set up camp, though travelers should note that the single bar of Verizon LTE cell service available at the bottom quickly drops to zero once inside the canyon. Proper tire placement, aired-down tires, and a spotter are highly recommended to safely navigate the rocky sections of this moderately challenging route.
