Trail Overview
Lower Emily is an easy, scenic 2.4-mile gravel route in the Umpqua National Forest that provides essential access to the popular Grotto Falls Trailhead, making it perfect for beginners, scenic drivers, and families looking for a classic Pacific Northwest outdoor adventure. Navigating through towering Douglas firs and lush forest canopy, the trail features an easy technical rating of 1 with a gentle elevation range between 2,850 and 3,200 feet. Any standard passenger car or high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle can comfortably reach the trailhead parking area, which features a vault toilet located just past the bridge crossing.
Beyond the Grotto Falls Trailhead, the road conditions deteriorate rapidly as the path becomes increasingly narrow, heavily overgrown, and eventually ends abruptly at a massive, impassable washout. Drivers of larger trucks, SUVs, and SxSs should plan to turn around at the trailhead parking lot, as maneuvering or reversing past this point becomes nearly impossible due to the tight squeeze and lack of turnouts. Keep in mind that while the route is typically straightforward, the gravel surface is unmaintained during winter and can become slick or rutted after heavy rain or snow, requiring extra caution.
Access Description
The route is open to most vehicles up to the Grotto Falls Trailhead, where a vault toilet and parking are available. Beyond the trailhead bridge, the road becomes extremely narrow, overgrown, and ultimately blocked by a major washout; all vehicles, especially larger trucks and SxSs, should use the trailhead area to turn around.
