Trail Overview
Long Way to Little Applegate River is a scenic and straightforward point-to-point connection road that provides beginner offroaders and scenic tourers with a direct transition from the valleys of Talent, Oregon, into the deep backcountry of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. This 10.6-mile route climbs steadily from a minimum elevation of 3,047 feet to a peak of 4,218 feet, gaining roughly 2,694 feet of elevation along its winding path. As the trail ascends, travelers are treated to expansive, scenic vistas of the surrounding peaks, including nearby Bald Mountain and Point Mountain. The route serves as an excellent gateway for those looking to explore the extensive network of forest service roads deeper in the mountain range.
The trail features a mild technical rating of 3, consisting primarily of an unpaved dirt and gravel surface that is suitable for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, stock SUVs, and SxSs. While the terrain is mostly easy, drivers will encounter a few mild off-camber sections that add some light excitement to the journey. The trail descends approximately 2,644 feet before linking with Brick Pile Road, and it can be completed in either direction. Winter weather brings significant snowpack to these elevations, meaning the route is best enjoyed from late spring through autumn, while winter travel requires proper recovery gear and snow-capable setups.
Access Description
The route is located within the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. It is generally free to access without permit requirements for standard recreation, but seasonal snow can block the road at higher elevations during the winter months, making it impassable for standard vehicles.
