Trail Overview
Fish Creek Gorge Overlook is an ideal short trek for off-roaders looking to experience the dramatic, glacier-carved landscapes of Steens Mountain in Southern Oregon. Spanning just under 0.6 miles, this route begins near Fish Creek Campground at an elevation of 7,447 feet and gently descends about 56 feet over a rugged dirt and rock surface. Passable by most high-clearance 4x4 vehicles, the trail has a technical rating of 3, presenting occasional small rocks and minor ruts.
The destination rewards visitors with views of Fish Creek Gorge and the surrounding high desert terrain characteristic of this massive fault block mountain. Camping opportunities are plentiful in the immediate area, with dispersed sites located off the road and near the dried-up lake bed just south of Fish Lake. Given the high elevation, the trail is typically accessible from late spring through autumn.
History
This area was traditionally used by the Paiute Indigineous tribe and served as a sheep and cattle range for several generations before becoming a designated wilderness area in 2000.
