Trail Overview

This remote BLM route connecting Plush to Christmas Valley delivers a classic Oregon high desert experience, with long stretches of open two-track winding through sagebrush flats and rolling volcanic terrain. Expect a mix of firm gravel, sandy sections, and occasional rutted dirt that can get rough after storms. High clearance is recommended, especially on lesser-maintained segments. The drive feels isolated and expansive, with wide views across the basin-and-range landscape that defines this part of the state. Along the way, the scenery constantly shifts between sage plains, low hills, and ancient lakebeds, with opportunities to spot wildlife like pronghorn and wild horses. As you approach Christmas Valley, standout features include the massive Christmas Valley Sand Dunes--one of the largest inland dune systems in the Northwest and nearby volcanic formations like Crack in the Ground and Fort Rock. There are plenty of side trips to explore if you have time. Consider detouring toward Burma Rim for dramatic escarpment views or seeking out dispersed camping on BLM land for a quiet overnight under dark skies. The area rewards slow travel poke down side roads, exploring old two-tracks, and taking advantage of the vast public land to really experience Oregon's outback beyond the main route.
