The drive feels isolated and expansive, with wide views across the basin-and-range landscape that defines this part of the state. Along the way, the scenery constantly shifts between sage plains, low hills, and ancient lakebeds, with opportunities to spot wildlife like pronghorn and wild horses. As you approach Christmas Valley, standout features include the massive Christmas Valley Sand Dunes--one of the largest inland dune systems in the Northwest and nearby volcanic formations like Crack in the Ground and Fort Rock. There are plenty of side trips to explore if you have time.
