Trail Overview
Black Mountain Road is a 17.9-mile out-and-back single-lane gravel route. The road is tight and brushy in sections, with areas of larger gravel and occasional potholes that make it unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles. Along the route, there are numerous viewpoints, spur roads, and dispersed camping opportunities. The road ends at an intersection, beyond which routes quickly become overgrown, lead to private property, or narrow into single-track. Black Mountain Road is open from April 1 to November 30.
Difficulty
Black Mountain Road is best suited for high-clearance vehicles, as deep potholes can cause low-clearance vehicles to contact their bumpers when entering or exiting. The primary challenges include uneven surfaces, loose gravel, and tight, brushy sections with limited passing opportunities along the single-lane route. Weather conditions such as rain or snow can increase difficulty, particularly where the surface becomes soft or rutted. As with most trails in the area, bringing a chainsaw or equipment to clear fallen trees is recommended.
