Trail Overview
Alder Springs (Forest Service Road 1390) is a rugged, 5.3-mile unpaved route providing high-clearance vehicles access to the scenic Whychus Creek canyon in the Crooked River National Grassland. Starting at Holmes Road, the trail features dirt, loose rock, and deep ruts, requiring a high-clearance 4WD or capable AWD vehicle. The route descends from 3,031 feet to 2,468 feet at the trailhead.
The initial portion passes through a private land easement where visitors must stay on the road and dispersed camping is prohibited. A seasonal closure blocks motorized vehicles from December 1 through April 14 to protect deer and elk winter range. The route ends at the Alder Springs Trailhead, which serves as a staging area for hikes into the canyon.
Access Description
Motorized vehicles are subject to a seasonal gate closure from December 1 through April 14 to protect deer and elk winter range. The initial portion of the route traverses a private land easement; visitors must remain on the road, and dispersed camping is strictly prohibited in this section. No permits or fees are required to park at the trailhead, but visitors must pack out all trash.
