Trail Overview
This is a historical forest service road with Appalachian history. You will come across an old ranger station from the early 1900s with a billboard history of the station, the road, and the fire tower at the top of the mountain. This is a very easy trail; it's a well-maintained gravel road all the way to the top. What it lacks in technical 4x4 off-roading, it makes up for in big views and history. Once at the top, you will be just over a mile above sea level with the ability to see most of Western North Carolina's national parks as well as South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.
History
The trial was established in the early 1900s, when a ranger station and a fire watch tower were built. It was the first in Western North Carolina that was accessible by automobile. The first vehicle that drove up there was a Model T. It was an all adventure because of overheating reasons. You can read all about it at the Ranger Station billboard
