Trail Overview
The Watauga Turnpike is a longer forest service road connecting the towns of Gragg and Edgemont. The road is relatively easy to travel, with the most difficult sections consisting of a few ruts, bumps, and narrow portions. It is generally accessible for most vehicles with moderate ground clearance, as the rougher spots can typically be avoided. The surface is composed entirely of dirt, gravel, and crushed limestone, with some sections recently improved due to storm and hurricane damage. Along the route are several potential campsites, hiking trailheads, and occasional offshoots, depending on the time of year. Campsites vary in size, with some accommodating just one or two vehicles and others fitting up to six or seven. One notable campsite features an optional moderate mud pit at the entrance--about 15 inches deep with a mostly solid bottom--offering a fun obstacle for higher-clearance vehicles. A bypass is available for those who prefer to avoid it.
